Rotate your pairs

Leather needs a day to breathe. Wearing the same pair two days in a row traps moisture in the lining, which stretches the leather and feeds odour. Two pairs in rotation last far longer than twice as long: they age at a fraction of the pace.

Put them on properly

Most shoes die at the heel. Crushing the heel counter with your finger, or forcing your foot in while standing, breaks the internal stiffener that gives the shoe its shape. A long shoehorn guides your heel in without bending, keeps the counter rigid, and turns the most destructive moment of a shoe's day into the gentlest. This is the whole reason Léon exists, and why it lives by the door.

Dry them slowly, always

Wet shoes go on their side at room temperature, away from radiators. Direct heat cooks leather and cracks it within a season. Stuff them with newspaper for the first hour, change it once, then let air do the rest. Count a full day before wearing them again.

Brush before you polish

Dust is abrasive. A thirty-second pass with a horsehair brush after each wear does more for the leather than a monthly polish over dirt. Keep the brush where the shoes live: care you can reach is care that happens.

Feed the leather monthly

A thin layer of neutral cream once a month keeps leather supple and water-resistant. Work it in with a cloth, wait ten minutes, buff. Coloured polish is for covering scuffs; cream is for keeping the material alive. Suede asks only for its own brush and a protective spray twice a season.

Store them in daylight, not in a pile

Shoes tossed in a heap deform each other. A dedicated spot in the entryway, heels against the wall, keeps their shape and shortens your mornings. If a pair matters, give it cedar shoe trees: they hold the form and drink the day's moisture.

The two-minute evening routine

Shoes off with the shoehorn's help or a proper unlacing, quick brush, back to their spot. Two minutes, every day. Your shoes will look cared for because they are.
